A pumpkin carving competition, apple tasting, a buffet of dishes with local seasonal ingredients and live music all in an historic local barn made for a special occasion when Transition Town Haslemere celebrated its first anniversary with a Sustainable Harvest Picnic (press release)
Event DetailsYou and your family are invited to join us at our Sustainable Harvest Picnic at a Farm near Haslemere on Saturday October 24th from 5.00 to 8.00 pm.
The picnic has been organised in order to :
- Recognise & Support:
The International Day of Climate Action from www.350.org - Celebrate Transition Town Haslemere’s first birthday…
- Allow our supporters to get together and have some fun !
This is an all-ticket event and we are asking each family to bring cold dishes for your picnic (we do not have the ability to keep food warm), ideally made from local produce which will be shared by everyone, and your own drinks too.
We will have a prize for the best carved pumpkin so please do…
bring your ready-carved pumpkin along with you !
At the picnic we will have a number of events including:
- Live music
- Apple and cheese tasting
- Hot apple juice
- Judging of your carved pumpkins
- Photo-shoot to mark the International Day of Climate Change
- Guest speakers
- And of course the picnic itself
We are asking those attending for a voluntary contribution (suggested minimum £5 per family) to help cover costs.
Please RSVP to tthpicnic@googlemail.com and tell us how many tickets you would like for you and your family, and the names of those who are coming.
We will then confirm by email to you with details of how to get there.
Places are limited and this picnic is ONLY open to registered supporters of Transition Town Haslemere, their families, and their friends.
We look forward to seeing you there, at what promises to be a fun evening.

CPRE Local Food Mapping Volunteers Meeting
Haslewey Community Centre, Lion Green, Haslemere
The Mapping Local Food Webs project aims to give people the materials and
support they need to ‘map’ – research and record – their local food networks
or webs in their towns and cities across England. The findings should
increase understanding of the links between producers and consumers, and
the impact those links have on people in urban and rural areas.
This project has just started in Haslemere – one of up to 24 communities in
England where the mapping activity will occur during 2009. It is already
supported by the Chamber of Trade and Commerce, Transition Town Haslemere,
Haslemere Food Festival, and local producers in the area. We need
volunteers with a passion and interest in local food to form a local
research team to organise and carry out various pieces of research from
now until the end of summer 2009.
Activities will include interviewing shoppers, food outlets and producers
on their views of local food, and organising a workshop for the local
community to explore the social, environmental and economic impacts of
local food. The research will also identify barriers to local food in terms
of affordability, accessibility and availability. The work is flexible in
terms of days and hours.
If you are interested in getting involved or would like more information,
please email or telephone Karen Gardham, Mapping Local Food Webs South East
Co-ordinator, kareng@cpre.org.uk; 01273 540 998
Friday 8th May @ 8pm
Film Screening at Haslemere Hall of “The Age of Stupid”
At the request of TTH, Haslemere Hall is showing The Age of Stupid as part of its cinema season. The Age of Stupid is the new movie from Director Franny Armstrong (McLibel) and producer John Battsek (One Day In September). Pete Postlethwaite stars as a man living alone in the devastated future world of 2055, looking at old footage from 2008 and asking: why didn’t we stop climate change when we had the chance?
Wednesday 6th May 2009 @ 7pm
Open Meeting – Mapping Our Local Food Network
Venue : Georgian House Hotel, High Street, Haslemere
TTH is working with the Council for the Protection of Rural England (CPRE)
on a project to map the local food network of Haslemere, including local producers, retailers and consumers. CPRE has chosen Haslemere as one of its pilot towns for what will eventually be a national mapping project. This is very timely and fortuitous for TTH as it fits very well with our aims of promoting sustainable local food resources. CPRE needs a number of volunteers to help with the mapping project. We plan to support the project’s research and evolve a local food group from this work.
Sunday 3rd May 2009 @ 10:30am

WWF Earth Hour 2009
At 8.30pm on 28th March, people around the world turned their lights off for one hour – WWF Earth Hour. Haslemere joined over 3,000 towns and cities around the world in supporting WWF’s Earth Hour – the largest ever global action on climate change. From 8:30 to 9:30 pm, Haslemere High Street was much darker than usual, with local restaurants full of customers enjoying dinner by candlelight.
To mark the occasion, there was a ceremonial ‘switch off’ at the Georgian House Hotel, which joined other well-known landmarks such as Big Ben, Buckingham Palace, the Sydney Opera House, Golden Gate Bridge and the Eiffel Tower in going dark for Earth Hour. Mayor William King led the countdown to Earth Hour, joined by members of the Town Council and Transition Town Haslemere, plus several WWF staff who live in Haslemere.
Tuesday 3rd March 2009 @ 7:00pm
Open Meeting – Georgian House Hotel, Haslemere High St.
Transition Town Haslemere invites local people to an open meeting on the town’s long-term sustainability. The meeting will be an open forum for putting forward ideas and suggestions for community-based projects.

Haslemere Christmas Fair
Transition Town Haslemere were invited by the Haslemere Initiative to share a stand at the Christmas Fair. The group conducted a survey to find out how much Haslemere residents, visitors and our local communities understand and are concerned about “Climate Change” and “Peak Oil”. They also provided information on the transition town movement and ran a competition with a box of fresh local vegetables and a home energy monitor as prizes.
