Groups & Projects

The key characteristic of a transition town initiative is that it comes from the community. Although Transition Town Haslemere is working with the town and borough councils and other organisations, it is about groups of local people forming to tackle issues such as waste, energy, local food, transport, health, etc. Such collective action can be more effective than isolated individual efforts, and is empowering for the local community.

Haslemere is well suited to the model, with an active community, excellent local food sources, thriving local businesses, a lively cultural calendar, and beautiful natural surroundings. It has good rail links, and is already a Fairtrade town.

Some examples of the projects Transition Town Haslemere plans to launch include improving household and business energy efficiency, providing more opportunities for residents to grow their own food, a campaign to reduce the use of plastic bags in the town, and encouraging more recycling.
